Artist Bio

Anna Kovacs (AnnaK) reflects on the unexpected twists of life that led her to embrace art as a full-time career and business at the age of 60, embracing her identity as a self-taught artist and with complete disregard to societal expectations and limitations of what it is to be considered a ‘woman of a certain age’.

Inspired by the breathtaking natural environment, particularly of her native Australia, and fuelled by her own personal spiritual quest, AnnaK's artwork embodies a vibrant fusion of these influences and elements, underscored by a profound love for colour and intricate detail, expressed in what has been described as a blend of realism and impressionism. AnnaK's artistic journey has taken her beyond national borders, with her works gracing exhibitions in galleries across Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements, is a commissioned artist and her works reside internationally.

Artist Statement

My works are a celebration of the natural world and the human experience. I have two streams within what I create. One part is highlighting the delicate balance of the natural world, focusing on many endangered species. The other may be considered an exploration into the spiritual or shamanic nature that is within. In the process of bringing my art from the ether to reality, I grow, I change, I uncover truths, I learn about myself. Having been within a cocoon that lasted a lifetime, the process itself gives me greater clarity about myself. My intention for the viewer to join me on this journey of greater understanding of the self, regardless of whether the image depicted is animal or human. That the viewer too, is given a gift, even for a moment, to delve deeper into themselves. That they take time to reflect, to become a better more whole individual. From here, a harmonised individual is able to reflect out a greater humanity which has an impact of everything and everyone.

About me in my own informal words

Your curiosity must be tweaked for you to be here, so allow me to fill you in on who I am as well as the what, why and how I do what I do.

It's funny what life can deliver to you. I had not expected at the tender age of 60 that I would be starting a brand new life, a new career and a new me. That's exactly what happened. In 2019 I began to re-dabble in art; nothing over the top, just a drawing here and there. Then in 2022 the whole thing exploded. I was 'arting' every night after dinner, then in the morning before work, and even at lunch time. I slowly encroached more and more over the dining table, setting up bigger easels. At the beginning of 2024 I renovated my home to include a dedicated studio.

2023 was a gift presented to me in my ability to turn to art full time. Not a hobby but an ambition to make this a career, yes even at the age of 60; age is just a number as far as I’m concerned. It's more about what happens to you when you finally accept who you are, something I have been all my life - the artist within. Also with a good laugh and a lot of joy along the way, and many learning curves.

I'm blessed to have been born in a country, Australia, that is astounding with its natural beauty, the source of much of my inspiration. My own personal evolution in self-awareness is also a source of inspiration. What you'll see in my artworks is a blend of both of these elements, along with a love of colour and detail.
